Varsity soccer team defeats Holt, 1-0

Senior AJ Thompson earned a shutout Thursday with nine stops in the Panthers' defeat of Holt in the CAAC end-of-season tournament.
The game, characterized by Coach Ron Rudland as being heavily defensive, was won on a second-half goal scored by freshman Brennan Joseph on an assist from senior Devin Cole.

JV soccer ends season with exciting game against Holt

    The JV soccer team played their last game of the season Thursday night as they hosted the Holt Rams in the final of the CAAC Tournament. They lost a tough game by the score of 3-2. 
    It was a great game to watch, as the JV Panthers came back from a one goal deficit to take the lead 2-1 going into the second half.  While the team played some good possession ball they were unable to add another goal as Holt scored twice to take the lead 3-2.  Scoring for the Panthers were Zach Plaxico off an assist from Brayden Heerlyn and Evan Shaw with a great break-away shot off a perfect 40 yard assist from Zach Plaxico. 

Frosh/JV football fights Mounties to a tie

The Freshman/JV football team tied a very strong Northwest team last night by the score of 20-20.  
The undersized Panthers never trailed in the game and had a chance to win in the last 30 seconds, but were unable to capitalize. 
Scoring for Western were Mason Callow with a 75-yard touchdown reception, and Austin Cooper with two rushing touchdowns and one passing TD.  The tie puts their record at 6-1-1 on the season. 

Golf season ends near Flint

The girls golf season ended yesterday at the state regional tournament, held at Spring Meadows Country Club, which is located near Flint
 Alex Vann posted her career best score of 95 in very windy conditions.  Alyssa Joseph,  after receiving first team all-conference honors, struggled to a 104.  Henley Nowicki and Alexa Marston added a 108 and 110 respectively.

Hemisphere reaches milestone in page views

The Western Hemisphere, found online at 1400hemisphere.blogspot.com, reached a milestone in page views on Oct. 11, 2012, with its 1400th view.
The site, named for the street address of the Western School District's Dearing Road campus, has been in existence for just over a month, and serves as a collection point for announcements and news for the Western High School community.

Seniors to vote Monday for class song, motto, flower, and color

Seniors Monday in your English classes you will receive a ballot to vote for your favorite song, motto, flower and color. Think about what you will like over the weekend. Turn them to your English teacher by Friday, Oct. 12.

NHS to meet after school Tuesday

All NHS members should meet in Mr. Nicolai's room after school Tuesday, Oct. 16, to elect officers and plan the induction.

Western drops Volley for Hope match to Titans

   The Lady Panthers hosted Lumen Christi for Western's Volley for Hope match and was defeated 25-23, 16-25, 17-25, 20-25. 
    Libby Breton was 25-28 hitting with 8 kills, she had 3 aces and 2 block kills.  Taylor Johnston added 7 kills and Clara Male had 6 kills.  Unfortunately the defense and offense did not connect.  Limited communication and mental errors  contributed to the loss.  Lumen Christi kept the ball in play and were consistent all night.  
    The Lady Panthers end league play 1-5.

No. 6 ranked Haslett falls to Western in shootout

The varsity soccer team defeated #6 ranked Haslett last night in a penalty kick shootout in the CAAC tournament.
The score was tied at 2-2 in regulation play with goals by Payton Wheeler and Mitchell Palmer. Five Panthers put the ball in the goal in the shootout.  They are Gene Jones, Brennan Joesph, Devin Cole, Mitchell Palmer and Payton Wheeler.  Haslett put all four of theirs in but AJ Thomson made the winning save on their final kicker to win the game.
The Varsity will play tomorrow night home against Holt.

Boys basketball sign up meeting Oct. 22 in gym at 2:45 p.m.

The meeting is for all  prospective players, freshman through varsity.

Tryouts will be November 12-14.  Exact times and calendars will be given at the meeting.

JV soccer comes up short at Haslett

On Tuesday the JV soccer team traveled to Haslett for the second round of the CAAC tournament and came up a bit short losing to the Vikings by the score of 2-0.
The game was tied 0-0 at half but, despite some better play by the Panthers in the second half, they could not hold off the strong attack of Haslett.  The teams final game of the season is this Thursday against Holt with a 5 p.m. start.

JV volleyball beats Waverly

     Last night we had a conference match and Western JV volleyball won 25-12,25-13 against Lansing Waverly. 
     Some of the highlights:  Sierra Griffith and Cassidy Pluta each had 5 kills and Laura Holton had 14 assists and Cassie Robinson had 6 serving aces.  Great job!  Overall record is 15-13-4. 

Lady Panthers whomp on Waverly

The Lady Panthers hosted Lansing Waverly and defeated them 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17.  
Both the offense and defense were out in full force this evening.  They played very well as a unit and Alexa Pluta was 14 of 15 serving and 65 assists.  Taylor Johnston was 12 of 12 serving with 3 aces.   Libby Breton was 15 of 17 hitting with 9 kills and Cheyenne Bolenbaugh added 5 kills to the team total. 

Western will host Lumen Christi on Wednesday for a Volley for Hope match.

Panthers win Western JV Volleyball Tournament


This weekend the JV Volleyball team hosted our own 12 team tournament.  We started  out our pool play slow by losing to Union City 18-25,21-25.   However, we then went on to win against Portland 25-23 and 25-14.  We beat Columbia Central 25-18,25-13.  This gave us a 4-2 pool play record.  We were placed in the Silver Bracket.  Our first game was against Union City who had beaten us before.  We won!  With the score of 25-10 and 25-22.  That put us in the finals  against Lansing Catholic.  We WON 25-22 and 25-19.  Thie girls had a great day!
Some of the highlights were Jessica Claar with 16 serving aces, Cassidy Pluta 16 kills, Susie Davenport had 28 assists and Sierra Griffith had 17 blocks for the day.
